type cosmic
This book wasn't something I specifically needed. I received it as a gift from my undergraduate typeface class teacher after helping him plan an exhibition.
However, for a book I just picked up, it was a steal. It's a typeface list compiled with digital fonts, essentially a type sampler. The two volumes, both massive, are divided into serif and sans serif versions. While it's certainly not a fun read, it offers a wealth of practical samples for designers who lack the familiarity of actual-size typefaces. Considering this, it could be a more helpful reference for typeface work than for typesetting. The breadth of information presented is impressive, but the title seems a bit pretentious...
Come to think of it, how did they secure all the fonts used in this book? Considering copyright issues, it seems impossible to cover the production costs.
