『Vertical and Horizontal』

『Vertical and Horizontal』 is a Morisawa PR magazine that was published from 1983, and its last issue was No. 57 in 2002 (edited by Itko Tanaka).

When I first encountered this book in Japan, the concept of a corporate PR magazine was unfamiliar, and I remember questioning whether a design magazine truly deserved such excellence. Being a typeface company, it doesn't just cover typefaces; each issue features a diverse range of domestic and international design news, centered around a theme. Furthermore, the cover design for each issue, which takes both vertical and horizontal writing into account, is a masterpiece.

As the title suggests, this book utilizes both vertical and horizontal writing in one volume. While this might seem contradictory from a typical book perspective, the structure is structured so that half of the book is left-turned, while the other half is right-turned, with the horizontal and vertical pages intersecting in the middle.

Considering the times, the younger versions of now-retired master designers are often featured, and works already recognized as masterpieces are often introduced for the first time, making turning the pages quite enjoyable.
