『The Two Chikhts of Iwan and Jan』
Everyone's approach to design philosophy fluctuates. Even Jan Tschichold, a leading 20th-century designer, typographer, and researcher, exhibited contrasting hues in his youth and later years. It's almost as if one could question whether his work was the work of a single artist.
"Two Tschicholds: Ian and Jan" candidly depicts the relationship between society and design, covering Tschichold's birth, his childhood and adolescence, the direction of his design shaped by the global ideological clash, and his conflicts with later designers centered on design style. The book explores the lives of Tschichold in his youth and later years, candidly portraying the relationship between society and design. The conflict between Max Bill and Tschichold, in particular, creates an atmosphere where the young and old seem to engage in a design competition that transcends time. The latter part also includes a passage that invites reflection on Eastern and Western design perspectives, which I personally found quite poignant.
I found out that 『Max Bill vs. Jan Tschichold: The Typography Debate』 had been published in Korea, so I skimmed through it on the subway, but the overall structure seemed completely different... (I'll introduce this book later.)
