Study of the Swimming Body
This book analyzes the typefaces of Suyeongsa (秀英舎). Given the historical context, it features a significant amount of comparative analysis with the Tsukiji Typeface Manufacture. It also features a large collection of type samples published by both companies, providing a realistic glimpse into the major trends in Ming typefaces at the time. As these two companies dominated the development of East Asian typefaces at the time, it offers crucial information for modern typeface research, and it also includes early modern Hangul typefaces.
Beyond the practical information, I found this book most satisfying because it allowed me to think honestly about how to approach the analysis of past typography from the perspective of a researcher.
It's always a pointless worry, but given the nature of the field, I wonder if a book with such highly specialized content will sell... But my worries are unfounded, as this rare book is out of print and hard to find even in used bookstores.
Although it is not excessive for a hardcover, the design exudes a modern feel and the gold foil gives it a luxurious impression.
